Map Ta Phut BLCP Coal Terminal is a coal terminal in Map Ta Phut Industrial Port located in Mueang Rayong, Thailand.
Location
The map below shows the location of the port.
Background
The BLCP coal berth is a dedicated (captive) coal-receiving terminal at the Map Ta Phut Industrial Port in Rayong Province, Thailand. It serves the adjacent 1,434 MW BLCP Power Station. The port is owned by the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) and received its first vessel on 27 March 1992. BLCP is one of nine private companies that run their own dedicated berths inside the port, separate from the port's public terminals.[1][2] The BLCP berth is 300 metres long, has a depth of 17 metres and can take vessels of up to 170,000 DWT. That makes it the deepest of the port's dedicated berths.[2] BLCP Power Ltd is a 50:50 joint venture between Banpu and Electricity Generating Public Company (EGCO). It signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) on 19 November 1997. The site, about 600 rai in the Phase 2 area of Map Ta Phut Industrial Port, has been leased from IEAT for 30 years from 30 June 2000.[3] Construction included dredging an approach channel and turning basin for coal carriers.[4] Unit 1 (717 MW) began commercial operation on 1 October 2006 and Unit 2 (717 MW) in February 2007. Coal handling at the berth started when the plant was commissioned.[3] The plant burns bituminous coal, mainly from Australia.[3] Imports were reported at about 3.6 million tonnes a year in 2025.[5] Vessels discharge with ship unloaders onto conveyor belts that carry the coal directly to the plant.[6] Port statistics put cargo through the BLCP berth at an average of 305,408 tonnes a month between October 2010 and June 2018, with a peak of 727,905 tonnes in October 2012.[7] BLCP's PPA with EGAT is due to expire in 2031. In July 2026 the company asked the Ministry of Energy to extend it, citing rising electricity demand from data centres.[8] BLCP is also studying co-firing low-carbon ammonia. The study started under an agreement with Japanese partners in April 2024 and was widened on 27 June 2025 to include PTT as ammonia supplier. It envisages 500,000 to 1 million tonnes of ammonia a year, which could cut the plant's coal use by about 5–20%.[9]
