Background

Nakhodka Marine Trade Port has two terminals, one for coal, another for dry bulk cargo, including coal.[1] The coal terminal is often referred to as the Main Terminal, the Main Side (Russian: Основной терминал, основная сторона), or Terminal №1. It is also referred to as UT-1 (Russian: УТ-1), short for coal terminal №1. Terminal №2 is also called the terminal on the Astafiev cape.

The terminal №2 handles coal, however, the capacity and throughput remain unclear. The project details listed are for the Terminal №1, specialized coal terminal.

In 2001, the Nakhodka Trade Sea Port became part of EVRAZ, a vertically integrated coal-mining and steel company. In 2014, the port handled 9.3 million tonnes of cargo.[2]

In the month of June 2015, coal handling at EVRAZ Nakhodka Trade Sea Port was 645,000 tonnes, a record for the port.[3]

In June 2017, EVRAZ sold 100% of the port to one of its shareholders, Lanebrook Limited, for US$354.4 million.[4] However, the two companies signed an agreement for EVRAZ to continue shipping coal through the Nakhodka Commercial Sea Port.[5]

In 2019, the port handled a total of 11.6 million tonnes of cargo, including 9.5 million tonnes of coal.[6] In 2021, the port handled 10.5 million tonnes of cargo[7]. In 2022, volumes reduced to 9.2 million tonnes, the largest part of which was coal.[8] The same level 9.2 million tonnes of turnover was reported in 2023, of which 8.3 was exports (presumably coal).[9]

In 2023, the port launched a specialized closed coal handling complex, having completed all the necessary examinations and received permits. As part of the port modernization and technical equipment program, the second Vityaz portal crane was put into operation. The third contracted crane of this type was planned to be delivered in 2024. The port planned to increase cargo turnover to 12 million tonnes in 2024 by expanding the range of cargo in the import direction and attracting new clients.[9] In the 6 months of 2024, the port exported 3.8 million tonnes of coal. [10]

In 2025, the main terminal, which is the coal terminal, handled 6.5 mtpa of cargo, assumed coal.[11]
