Background

Neryungrinsky coal mine (Нерюнгринский разрез) is a surface mine located close to the city of Neryungri, in the Neryungrinsky district, Sakha Republic, Russia. The Neryungrinsky coal mine is operated by Yakutugol Holding Company, a subsidiary of Mechel. Mechel acquired Yakutugol mines and license areas in October 2007.

The construction of the Neryungrinsky open pit was carried out in 1975-1985 in five separate bursts. The mine is located six kilometres west of Neryungri, one of the main industrial centres of Yakutia and its second largest city. The mine has a railway spur connected to the Russian rail system.

The Neryungrinsky coal mine produces coking coal and steam coal which are sold primarily in the Asia-Pacific region and domestically. Exported coal goes to Japan, South Korea, China and India.

In 2021 and 2020, the mine produced only coking coal - 4 million tonnes in 2021 and 5.1 million tonnes in 2020.

Neryungrinsky Washing Plant is located near the mine, it has an annual capacity of 9.0 million tonnes. The plant produces coking coal concentrate and middlings.

As per Mechel's report from 2018, the mining license for the mine was expected to run out in 2024. It is not known whether it has been renewed.

Expansion Plans

As of early 2023, Yakutugol planned to increase mining works at Neryungrinsky and increase overburden from 26.2 million cubic meters in 2022 to 42.1 million in 2023. This will allow to increase production to 6 million tonnes in 2024. In addition, to increase production in 2023 and beyond, the Neryungrinsky open pit mine plans to purchase 6 excavators, 4 drilling rigs and 18 dump trucks with a load capacity of 130 to 220 tonnes.

Total 2022 production of Yakutugol in 2022 was reported at 4 million tonnes together with the smaller mines Kangalassk coal mine and Dzhebariki-Khaya coal mine. The contribution of the smaller mines in 2022 is not known, in 2021 the mines' joint production was 0.4 million tonnes.
