Background

New Akashkinaree coal mine is operated by Bharat Coking Coal Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, India.[9]

The mine is part of Cluster No. 3 (BCCL).[9] Bharat Coking Coal Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, operates the Cluster 3 coal mines.[9]

Production in the underground section has been suspended, leaving only the opencast section operational.[10]

Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources

Global Energy Monitor researchers have identified coal mine boundary/boundaries and potential sources of coal mine methane (CMM) for this mine. These research results can be used to drive CMM attribution and mitigation efforts, particularly when combined with remotely sensed methane plume locations and mine ownership data. Explore the results with the embedded map at the top of this page by clicking on the mine boundary polygon or the CMM placemarkers to reveal more details. A detailed description of this research can be found in Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources. This data is also available as a downloadable companion dataset to the Global Coal Mine Tracker and the Global Methane Emitters Tracker.

ID Notes
M2502.B1 New Akashkinaree Coal Mine, part of Cluster III under Bharat Coking Coal Limited, is a mixed mine with both underground and opencast operations. Since opencast production accounts for about 90% of the output, it covers a significantly larger area compared to the underground portion. Exact boundary coordinates are not available, therefore the boundary has been georeferenced in Google Earth Pro using the Cluster III boundary shown in 'Land Restoration / Reclamation Monitoring of 4
