Background

PKN Coal Mines is located in Bulungan, North Kalimantan, the province of South Asia, Indonesia. It is divided into two blocks: North Block and South Block. North Block consists of two mines: Kelubir Coal Mine and Ardimulyo Coal Mine, while the South Block is divided into two separate mines, namely Sekayan coal mine, and Mangkupadi Coal Mine. [12] Currently, PKN operates two open-pit mines in Kelubir and Sekayan. The company began its first coal production at the Kelubir Mine Operation (KMO) site in 2009, expanded operations to the Sekayan Mine Operation (SMO) site in 2012, completed a 6.7-kilometre overland conveyor at SMO in 2015, and further expanded to the Ardimulyo Mine Operation (AMO) site in 2022.[13] Almost all PKN's low-rank coal product is destined for export markets, notably India and China, with the rest distributed in the domestic market. The coal is mainly used for power generation.

The company's coal is marketed at two grades, PKN 3400 and PKN 3100, referring to their approximate calorific values in kilocalories per kilogram.[14] On January 20, 2022, Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) lifted a coal export ban for 139 coal companies found to have met 100 percent or more of their Domestic Market Obligation (DMO); PT Pesona Khatulistiwa Nusantara was included on this list (company No. 113), confirming it was in active production and had met its domestic supply obligations as of that date.[15]
