PCEPC coal terminal is dedicated coal terminal fro the Port Qasim EPC power station in Pakistan.
Location
Background
The PQEPC Coal Terminal is a captive coal-unloading terminal at Port Qasim, Karachi, Sindh, serving the 1,320 MW Port Qasim coal-fired power plant. Both the plant and the jetty are owned by Port Qasim Electric Power Company (PQEPC), a joint venture of PowerChina (51%) and Qatar's Al-Mirqab Group (49%).[1] The terminal and a dedicated 4 km navigation channel, which can take coal ships of up to 50,000 DWT, were completed in August 2017.[2] The first 660 MW unit began generating in November 2017, and the second was commissioned in April 2018.[1] The Port Qasim Authority lists the terminal as handling coal for the plant's own use only, with a capacity of 4 million tonnes per year.[3] The plant burns imported sub-bituminous coal from Indonesia, South Africa, Botswana and Australia.[1]
The terminal handled 996,000 tonnes of coal in fiscal year 2024–25 (July 2024–June 2025) and 1.66 million tonnes in fiscal year 2025–26, after a low of 515,000 tonnes in 2023–24.[4] In May 2024 the government announced plans to convert the Port Qasim plant, along with the Sahiwal and Hub plants, from imported coal to domestic Thar coal, which would reduce or end coal imports through the jetty.[5]
