The Paradip Port Mechanized Coal Handling Plant (MCHP) is an operating coal export terminal at Paradip Port in Paradip, Odisha, India. The facility is owned and operated by the Paradip Port Authority.
Location
The terminal is situated at the confluence of the Mahanadi river and the Bay of Bengal.
Background
The terminal consists of Coal Berth I and Coal Berth II. It receives thermal coal by rail, stores the coal in a mechanized stockyard, and loads it onto vessels using conveyor systems and ship-loaders. The plant was commissioned on September 11, 2001.[1]
As of 2026 the Paradip Port Authority describes the plant as having a designed annual capacity of 42 million tonnes. Its equipment includes stackers, reclaimers, conveyors, two 4,000-tonne-per-hour ship-loaders, and mechanized unloading of BOBR coal wagons.[2] A 2023 report by India's Ministry of Coal similarly listed the two MCHP berths with a combined capacity of 41.2 million tonnes per year.[3]
The MCHP primarily handles domestically produced thermal coal for exports and coastal movement.[4]
