Background

The Pernik Coal Mine is a SURFACE coal mine in Pernik, Bulgaria.

The Pernik mine is owned by the private company, Mini Otkrit Vagledobiv EAD.[3] The company was established in 2002 as a 100% state-owned mining company. The open-cast coal mining complex is located in the town of Pernik. In 2005, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold 100% stake in the company to local private firm Kornikom. In 2011, Seychelles-based company Amrafel became the sole owner of Mini Otkrit Vagledobiv.[4] According to another source, in 2014 the shareholders changed again and Laumer Ltd became the sole shareholder.[5]

The ultimate parent is allegedly a UK company that is ultimately connected to the businessman Hristo Kovacki.[6]

The mine supplies Bobov Dol power station[3] and Republika power station.

According to the 2021 Energy Bulletin published by the Ministry of Energy of Bulgaria, coal production of Subbituminous coal was only 0.84 million tonnes (3% of total coal production of 28 million tonnes). This was represented by Pernik coal field (37% or 0.31 million tonnes) and Bobov Dol coal field (63% or 0.52 million tonnes in 2021).[7]

The same report by the Ministry of Energy from 2022 stated that coal production from the Pernik mine was 0.245 Mt (or 35% of total Subbitiminous coal extraction of 0.7Mt).[8]

According to a media article from 2021, the mine has reserves for another 5-10 years.[9]
