Background

The Polce Port Coal Terminal is a bulk cargo terminal that also handles aluminum, iron, phosphates, in addition to coal As of 2015, it could transport 15,000 tonnes (33,000,000 lb) of cargo per day. [2]

The terminal terminal was expanded in two phases. From 2006 to 2016, the terminal's capacity was increased to 4.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). Funding for the expansion was provided by the World Bank and the Croatian Government.[3] The second phase of the expansion, increasing dry bulk capacity to 6 mtpa, was completed in February 2016.[4]

Ploce power station was a proposed 800-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station in Ploce port's industrial zone. The project was cancelled after 90% of voters in a referendum rejected the proposed plant in January 2015.[5]

Decline of Port Operations

The port's total throughput in 2025 amounted to 3.17 million tonnes, down 20% on the year. The company attributed the decrease in throughput to a 48% drop in bulk cargo, mainly coal, slag and clinker. The fall in cargo throughput was due to a suspension of railway traffic in the Jablanica and Konjica regions of Bosnia at the start of the last quarter of 2024 due to damage to infrastructure from extreme rainfall and floods. Railway traffic there reopened at the end of January 2025.[6]
