Background

The port is technically a terminal with 4 berths. The main products are coal, coke, metal products.[1]

As of 2021, the port shipped 1.5 million tonnes of cargo a year, mostly coal, coke, and rolled metal.[2] Owner and mining company Mechel exports coal from Russia's Kuznetsk Basin through the port to countries in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. It also imports coking coal. The cargo is either shipped directly aboard river-sea type ships or transferred in the Kerch Straits onto bulk carriers.[3] The port has an annual capacity of 2.5 million tonnes for all cargo.[4]

In 2019, the port handled 1.8 million tonnes of cargo, including 1.2 million tonnes of coal and 0.6 million tonnes of oil.[5] In the first nine months of 2021, the port handled 1.1 million tonnes, 58% of which was coal. 100% of the cargo handled in 2021 was intended for export, with the bulk of deliveries made to customers from Turkey (73%), followed by Malta (16%), Romania (4%), Greece (4%) and Bulgaria (2%).[6]

In February 2021, regulators performed an unscheduled audit at Port Mechel Temryuk. Inspectors found violations of water legislation, violations of legislation on expertise, and violations waste management practices. As a result of the audit, OOO Port Mechel-Temryuk and the company's officials were fined 985 thousand rubles (approximately US$13,000).[7]

Port Temryuk was attacked by Ukrainian forces in 2025, however the extent of the damage is uncertain.[8]
