Port of Louis Coal Terminal is a coal port in Mauritius.[1]
Location
Port Louis Harbour, the principal port of Mauritius, is located on the island's north-west coast.
Background
Coal imported into Mauritius is discharged at Port Louis harbour, where there is no dedicated coal terminal. Coal is handled across two multi-purpose quays in Terminal II: Quay No.1 (123 m, 12.2 m depth), which also takes black oil and fertilizers, and Quay No.2 (180 m, 12.2 m depth), shared with cement and containers.[2] The coal trade is seasonal. Mauritius's coal is burned by independent power producers in the sugar industry, which run on bagasse during the cane harvest from June to November and switch to imported coal from December to May.[3]
Coal volumes peaked in 2017 at 1,430,552 tonnes and have since roughly halved. Imports rose steadily from 559,900 tonnes in 2009 to that peak,[4] then fell to 741,217 tonnes in 2024 and 638,806 tonnes in 2025. Coal-fired generation fell over the same period from 1,336.4 GWh, or 39.1% of electricity, in 2024 to 1,116.8 GWh, or 31.4%, in 2025, with coal accounting for 26.4% of imported fuels.<sup>[6]</sup> Mauritius targets 60% renewable electricity by 2030.[5]
