Background: The Reddale mine is a newly opened mine (March 2012), operating on the same 30 ha site as two small mines that operated in the 1980s.[1] The mine, scheduled to produce approximately 140,000 tonnes of coal over two to three years for the company's industrial customers on the West Coast and upper South Island, is being operated by Doug Hood Mining as a contractor to Solid Energy.[2]
Current owner: Solid Energy
Status: Operational
Production capacity: Approx 45-70,000 tonnes per annum.[3]
The first coal was produced in March 2012 and a total of 33,000 tonnes were produced by the end of September 2012.[4][5]
Estimated recoverable reserves: Solid Energy initially stated that all mining and remedial works at Reddale were expected to be completed within five years.[6]However, in its 2011 and 2012 reports the company stated that exploration in the nearby Burkes Creek area had confirmed an inferred resource of 10 million tonnes, which it viewed as a potential replacement for the Reddale deposit. Further resource definition and conceptual mine planning work were underway on that part of the deposit.[7][8]
Current owner: Solid Energy
Mining technique: Opencast
Type of coal: Hard coking coal
Market information: Thermal coal supplies Solid Energy's industrial customers on the West Coast and upper South Island.[9]
