Background

The Rotterdam Bulk Terminal (RBT) specialized in the handling and storage of bulk commodities such as dry minerals, coal, agri- and biomass.[2] It sat on a seven hectare territory with 120,000 tonnes of coal storage. In total, 3 million tonnes of dry cargo could be transshipped via the terminal on a yearly basis.[3]

Establishment in 1999

In 1999, Rotterdam Bulk Terminal was founded by Hes Beheer (50%) and Maja Stevedores (50%). It was established to take over the former EBS terminal at the Vulcaanhaven in Vlaardingen. The Vulcaanhaven Terminal, built in 1900, once belonged to a German Steelindustry and was sold to Frans Swarttouw, the predecessor of EBS. Until the 80s, the Vulcaanhaven terminal played a key role in the handling of coal, steelscrap, and other bulk commodities. Towards the turn of the century, environmental legislation forced parties to abandon steelscrap handling and fueled EBS' decision to leave the Vulcaanhaven Terminal in 1999.[4]

Ownership change and 2019 demolition

The Rotterdam Bulk Terminal (RBT) in Vlaardingen, a 100% HES International Company, was permanently close down in February 2019. RBT was a 50/50 joint venture between HES International and Maja Stevedoring until HES took over the shares of Maja Stevedoring in April 2018 in order to be able to organize a well-ordered closure.[5]

In January 2019, HES International reported the following:

“In 2018, the decision was taken to close down RBT as a continuation of services was not considered a viable option. In order to safeguard a safe and reliable operation of the terminal’s operations, a major investment program would have been necessary. The investments that were required in that respect were disproportionate to the profitability that could have been achieved. In addition, the terminal has been hampered by its limited capacity, limited draft and close proximity to the city of Vlaardingen. … The demolition activities at RBT are already in an advanced stage and will conclude in the first quarter of this year.” [5]
