Background

In 2018, Rungta Mines Ltd. proposed to install a 2.85 mtpa steel plant at villages Jharbandh, Galpada and Tarkabeda, district Dhenkanal in Odisha. It planned to establish the facilities in two phases of 1.45 million tonnes per annum followed by 1.4 million tonnes per annum.[1] The capacities and configuration were modified subsequently.[2]

According to the OECD steelmaking report, the plant plans to expand its EAF capacity by 110 ttpa by 2030.[3] According to an environmental clearance dated August, 2021, the plant is partially under operation and partially under construction. The plant has also proposed to expand facilities from 3.55 mtpa to 7.53 mtpa.[4]
