Background

SAIL has Maharatna CPSE (Central Public Sector Enterprise) status by the Government of India under the Ministry of Steel.[1]

In 1959, DSP started production with an initial crude steel capacity of 1 mtpa, which was progressively increased to 1.8 mtpa during the modernisation which was announced in 1985 and further to 2.2 MTPA during recently completed Modernization & Expansion Plan (MEP).[2]

Under its Vision 2030 Programme, SAIL is planning a SAIL-wide expansion of 29.6 mtpa with an investment of over US $31 billion, which would entail an expansion of crude steel capacity to 7500 ttpa at the Durgapur plant.[3] The construction of the expansion project is expected to begin in 2024 and become operational by 2030.[4][3] As of September 2023, the expansion project is getting finalised.[5][6][7]
