Background

The Sandusky Coal Dock has been operating since the late 1891. At its peak in the 1940s, the dock operated 3 piers and handled 14 million short tons of coal per year. The two older piers were retired in 1957 and 1969. The remaining pier was constructed in 1939 and remains in operation today. Norfolk Southern currently operates the Sandusky Dock.[2]

In 2010, the US Army Corps of Engineers estimated that the Sandusky Dock handled 3.5 million short tons (approximately 3.18 million metric tonnes) of coal per year.[3] In recent years, approximately 95% of the coal passing through the dock has been used for steel-making.[2]
