Background

The Saraji mine is a surface mine near Peak Downs in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, Australia. [7] The mine is owned and operated by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), a 50:50 joint venture between BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi Development. (BMA also operates the Peak Downs mine, Goonyella Riverside mine, Norwich Park mine, Blackwater mine, the Gregory Crinum mine as well as the Hay Point Coal Terminal.

Coal from the project is exported via the coal loaders at Hay Point, 213km to the south west of the mine. Production from the mine began in late 1972.[8]

In September 2025, BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) announced that the Saraji South coking coal mine in Queensland will be paused and placed into care and maintenance from November 2025 due to weak metallurgical coal prices and high state royalties, with operations suspended and approximately 750 jobs affected.[9]

Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources

Global Energy Monitor researchers have identified coal mine boundary/boundaries and potential sources of coal mine methane (CMM) for this mine. These research results can be used to drive CMM attribution and mitigation efforts, particularly when combined with remotely sensed methane plume locations and mine ownership data. Explore the results with the embedded map at the top of this page by clicking on the mine boundary polygon or the CMM placemarkers to reveal more details. A detailed description of this research can be found in Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources. This data is also available as a downloadable companion dataset to the Global Coal Mine Tracker and the Global Methane Emitters Tracker.

M0096.B1 The boundary is derived from information found in the Saraji East Mining Lease Project INITIAL ADVICE STATEMENT Final 10 February 2017 report , https://web.archive.org/web/20240403042430/https://www.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0015/108411/saraji_east_ias.pdf. Section 1.2 Project Background, page 2 : "As depicted in Figure 1-1, the Project is located adjacent to the existing Saraji Open-Cut Coal Mine (Saraji Mine). BMA currently operates the Saraji Mine on Mining Lease (ML) 70142, ML 1775, ML 1784, ML 1782, ML 2360, ML 2410, ML 70294, ML 70298 and ML 70328". The Saraji coal mine is sandwiched between Peak Downs coal mine to the north, Norwich Park coal mine to the south, and the Saraji East mine to the east. The location and shape of the southern boundary edge shared with Norwich Park has been estimated, as has the uppermost northeast edge shared with Peak Downs mine. Prior to adjustments where necessary to support the above information, mining lease geometries were extracted from the Queensland Mining Leases dataset, https://web.archive.org/web/2/https://www.data.qld.gov.au/dataset/queensland-mining-and-exploration-tenure-series/resource/f87794b8-7b9a-4732-89bb-56ccb2228d27. The mining leases components permit names taken from the Queensland Mining Leases dataset are as follows: ML 70142 - boomerang creek; ML 1775 - Peak Downs; ML 1784 - Saraji mine; ML 1782 - Norwich Park; ML 2360 - Fiddlewood; ML 2410 - Phillips Creek; ML 70294 - Hakea West; ML 70298 - Hakea South; ML 70328 - Tay-Glen. The area of the boundary is 122 sq km.
