Separi barge loading facility

From Global Energy Monitor

Separi Coal Port is a coal-loading facility located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, on the banks of the Mahakam River. The facility has an annual capacity of 20 million tonnes.[1] Barges with 8,000 tonnes of capacity carry coal to anchorage points on the open sea, where floating cranes transfer coal to customer vessels.

Background

In 2009 Harum Energy bought the coal barging and transshipment company, PT Layar Lintas Jaya (LLJ). In its 2010 annual report the company states that LLJ owns and operates "a fleet of tugboats, barges and transshipment assets, including floating cranes."[2] The company also stated that "after crushing, coal is then loaded onto barges and transported to the open sea transshipment anchorages either at Muara Jawa (approximately 143 km) or Muara Berau (approximately 265 km). The coal is then transferred into the customer’s vessel using cranes. Barging and transshipment operations including floating crane activities are primarily conducted by LLJ."[3]

In 2010 the port exported all the coal from the Separi mining operations of two Harum Energy subsidiaries, Mahakam Sumber Jaya (MSJ) and Santan Batubara (SB), about 40 km from the barge. In 2010 the company produced 7.4 million tonnes of thermal coal from its two operating coal projects. Harum Energy is currently developing a third coal mining operation which was due to be commissioned in 2011.[4] As of October 2021, the third coal mine is not yet operational.

From the barge facility, coal is transported to either the Muara Berau Anchorage or the Muara Jawa anchorage.[5]
