Background

Shenhua Tianjin Coal Terminal is owned by national coal mining and energy company China Shenhua. Phase I of the terminal has an annual capacity of 45 million tonnes.[1]

A Phase II was under development in 2014 to handle 35 million tonnes of coal a year, for a total of 80 million tonnes of capacity at the terminal.[2][3] However, there has been no update on Phase II since 2014.

The terminal had seaborne coal sales of 31 million tonnes in 2013.[4]

In November 2020, China Shenhua offloaded 4 million tonnes at the Shenhua Tianjin port; extrapolated to twelve years, they would offload around 48 million tonnes per year (likely less, given that 4 million tonnes in one month was considered a record), suggesting that extra capacity (via Phase II) was likely not added.[5]
