Background

The Sonoma Coal Mine is an open-cut coal mine located approximately 6 kilometres south of Collinsville at the northern end of the Bowen Basin in Queensland, Australia.

Sonoma Mine is owned by QCoal, a privately owned Queensland resource company. (QCoal also initiated development of the Sonoma deposit.)

The mine was commissioned in September 2007. As of 2010, it boasted a 170 million tonne resource with mining reserves estimated at 46 million tonnes."

It comprises a part of the QCoal Northern Hub, which also includes the Cows coal mine, Drake coal mine, and Jax coal mine.

Coal from Sonoma Mine is railed to Abbot Point Coal Terminal for export.
