Background

The pipeline was mentioned as a proposed pipeline in Gazprom's 2020 map for its Unified Gas Supply System.[2][1] The route appears to be an updated version of an expansion of the Power of Siberia Gas Pipeline, which is considered cancelled given no progress since its proposal in 2015. This pipeline, if built, will be an important connector in Gazprom's Eastern Gas Program, linking the Power of Siberia Gas Pipeline with the Sakhalin-Khabarovsk-Vladivostok Gas Pipeline in Russia's Far East.[3]

In 2022, the project was mentioned in the media under the name of "Eastern Gas Supply System".[4] In October 2022, it was reported that collection of initial data and engineering surveys had been launched. The studies are expected to be completed in 2029.[5] The Gazprom's 2022 Annual Report lists the pipeline under "Prospective/Under Construction Projects".[6] In March 2023, Russian Energy Minister Nikolay Shulginov said that the Sakhalin–Khabarovsk–Vladivostok pipeline and the Power of Siberia pipeline might be connected in the future in the area of Khabarovsk.[7]
