Background

Taboneo coal anchorage is a sub port Banjamarsin Port. It can handle 20,000 DWT coal bulk carriers.[2]

The types of vessels regularly calling at the port are Bulk Carrier (55%), General Cargo (8%), Cargo (4%), Oil Products Tanker (4%), Container Ship (4%).[3]

According to an industry report from early 2023, Banjarmasin jointly with the Taboneo anchorage was the top coal export terminal in 2022, exporting 78.1 million tonnes.[4]

Proposed terminal

In July 2014 it was reported that Indonesia planned to build 14 dedicated coal terminals on the islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra in a bid to curb illegal coal exports. One of the proposed locations was Taboneo. However the government was finding it difficult to obtain private funding for the terminals in the current environment of depressed coal prices.[5] As of November 2021, there is no indication that a dedicated coal terminal was built at Taboneo.
