Coal handling

The Ulsan Port's Coal Pier is 210 meters long with annual cargo-handling capacity of over 1.36 million metric tons.[1]

CJ Logistics (CJ Korea Express) has been operating the Ulsan Port Coal Pier since 1984, when it signed a 50-year lease.[2] The coal terminal (or "Coal Pier") is one of many berths at the port.[3] The Ulsan Port is located near the Onsan Port.[4]

Relocation plans

In 2015, the "3rd Basic Port Basic Plan Revision Plan" proposed to relocate the coal terminal given its closeness to the Taehwa River estuary and the city; the terminal presented dust pollution and other inconveniences to citizens. There were plans to replace it with a "water-friendly space." However, the Ulsan Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Administration and Ulsan Port Authority, the entities that own and manage the pier, also proposed a plan to convert the pier to handle liquid cargo if the coal terminal is removed.[2]

The coal terminal was scheduled to be relocated by 2020 according to plans, but updates were delayed due to the slow pace f development of the "Nam New Port" area. As of 2021, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries planned to move certain Ulsan Port terminal functions to Nam New Port by 2030. It also still had plans to use the existing coal pier as a liquid cargo handling wharf.[5][6] The Nam New Port appears to be at the Onsan Port.
