The Umzila coal mine (also known as Birmingham) is a proposed underground mine, to be operated by Canyon Coal, producing 3.6 million tonnes per annum, near Hendrina, Mpumalanga province, South Africa.[1]

Background
In early 2022, the Birmingham mine was renamed "Umzila" by owner Canyon Coal in an effort to better reflect the heritage of the local mining areas in which they are located.[2]
Based on a ROM production of 300 000 tonnes per month, Umzila mine has an estimated life of mine of approximately 13 years. As of 2020, the Birmingham coal mine is currently preparing the mining right, water use license and environmental authorization applications.[1] The project's status is uncertain, since there have been little to no updates other than the announcement of the mine's renaming (as mentioned above).
