Coal

In 2014 environmental groups filed a federal lawsuit against United Bulk's coal export facility in Plaquemines Parish, alleging the facility is polluting the Mississippi River. The suit states that the United Bulk terminal annually ships 10 million short tons of coal and petroleum coke to overseas markets.[2]

Ownership

In 2019, a subsidiary of T. Parker Host, which is a Norfolk, Virginia-based shipping agency, purchased the United Bulk Terminal from Marquard and Bahls.[3]

Expansion

In 2014 United Bulk said it was investing about $80 million to double the terminal's export capacity from 10 to 20 million short tons per year (approximately 9.1 to 18.1 million metric tons). The company plans to export coal from Illinois.[4][5]

However, in 2016 the terminal's capacity was still reported to be 10 million short tons per year.[6]

When T. Parker Host purchased the United Bulk Terminal in 2019, it reported that the port handled 252,831 metric tonnes of coal in 2018 and 86,088 metric tonnes of coal in 2017. Given that these numbers are significantly lower than 20 million, and that there was no mention of an expansion in coverage of the port's purchase, and a lack of any other updates, the terminal capacity expansion appears to be cancelled.[3]
