Background
The Uskovskaya coal mine (Усковская шахта) is an underground coal mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.
It is part of the Yuzhkuzbassugol coal mining complex. Raspadskaya PJSC, a subsidiary of Evraz, operates the mine and the whole Yuzhkuzbassugol coal mining complex.
Evraz announced in December 2021 that it was planning to spin off Raspadskaya, but these plans were cancelled in March 2022 due to the sanctions against Russia.[13]
The Uskovskaya coal mine was initially called Ulyanovskaya mine. Following a tragic accident in 2007 when 110 miners died, the coal mine was mothballed. In 2009 the mine was joined together with the mine Yubileynaya. In 2012, it was renamed as Uskovskaya.[14]
The designed capacity of the mine is 3 Mtpa.[15] In 2021, the mine commissioned a new longwall with 25 years of reserves.[16] Additional infrastructure was built to transfer coal mining to a new seam and new treatment and tunnelling equipment was installed. This all made it possible to extend the life of the mine until at least 2035.[16] Another new longwall was planned to be opened in June 2023.[17]
One fatality at the mine was reported in 2022.[18]
In November 2024, it was reported that the mine has met the business plan ahead of time, having extracted 2 million tonnes by the end of November.[19]
In April 2025, extraction from longwall 48-10 was completed, and in June longwall 48-12 was commissioned with reserves of 2.25 million tonnes, expected to be fully extracted by May 2026. The mine's total balance reserves stand at 328 million tonnes.[20]
In December 2025, the mine again met its annual production plan ahead of schedule, extracting 2 million tonnes of coking coal.[20]
Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources
Global Energy Monitor researchers have identified coal mine boundary/boundaries and potential sources of coal mine methane (CMM) for this mine. These research results can be used to drive CMM attribution and mitigation efforts, particularly when combined with remotely sensed methane plume locations and mine ownership data. Explore the results with the embedded map at the top of this page by clicking on the mine boundary polygon or the CMM placemarkers to reveal more details. A detailed description of this research can be found in Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources. This data is also available as a downloadable companion dataset to the Global Coal Mine Tracker and the Global Methane Emitters Tracker.

Methane Plumes Detected Nearby
Global Energy Monitor researchers analyze satellite-detected methane plumes in order to determine whether they have been observed at or near the site of GEM energy assets. The satellite data provider creates imagery of individual methane plumes and estimates their emission rates at the time of observation. GEM has reviewed many of these plume detections against Google Earth imagery and GEM’s own energy infrastructure tracker data. The following table lists methane plumes which are associated with the energy asset or facility based on distance and manual review. (A full description of the analysis process is available in the Global Methane Emitters Tracker methodology wiki page.)
