The VOC Port NCB-I Coal Terminal is an operating captive coal terminal at V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, India. The berth supplies the adjacent 1,000 MW NTPL Tuticorin power station.
Location
NCB-I is situated alongside the port's northern breakwater.
Background
NCB-I was constructed as a captive thermal-coal berth for NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited (NTPL), a joint venture between NLC India Limited and Tamil Nadu's state power utility. Commercial operation of the berth began on October 1, 2014.[1]
North Cargo Berth I was originally developed with a design capacity of 6.3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).[2] A subsequent port tender listed the berth's capacity as 12.2 mtpa.[3]
The berth is approximately 306 metres long and was designed for vessels of up to approximately 80,000 DWT. Coal unloaded at NCB-I is carried by a dedicated conveyor to the NTPL power station.[4]
