The Visakhapatnam Port EQ1 Coal Terminal is an operating mechanized bulk terminal at Visakhapatnam Port in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. The facility is located at East Quay 1 in the port's inner harbour.
Location
The terminal is located at Visakhapatnam Port, on the east coast of India in the state of Andhra Pradesh, along the Bay of Bengal.
Background
The terminal was developed by Adani Vizag Coal Terminal Private Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, under a build-design-finance-operate-transfer concession. Commercial operations began on October 1, 2014.[1]
The concession ended in 2021 following a dispute between Adani and the Visakhapatnam Port Authority. The port authority subsequently assumed control of the terminal and continued operating EQ1.[2]
The original terminal had a coal-handling capacity of 6.41 million tonnes per year. In 2025, environmental approval was granted for a configuration with total capacity of 6.8 million tonnes per year, comprising 5.8 million tonnes of mechanized handling of coal of all types and 1 million tonnes of conventionally handled limestone.[3]
