Background

VGCB was developed under a 30-year design-build-finance-operate-transfer concession to upgrade the port's former General Cargo Berth for mechanized handling of imported coking and steam coal.[1] The upgraded terminal was commissioned in April 2013.[2]

The berth was assessed as having an annual cargo capacity of 10.18 million tonnes. The operator describes its rated capacity as approximately 11 million tonnes per year.[2][3]

The terminal has an alongside depth of approximately 18.1 metres and can accommodate vessels of up to 200,000 deadweight tonnes. Its mechanized system includes three grab unloaders, stacker-reclaimers, conveyors and an automated wagon-loading system.[2]

Although VGCB was constructed as an import coal terminal, it has diversified into other bulk commodities. In April 2025, Vedanta reported the handling of a 199,500-tonne bauxite shipment at the terminal.[4]
