Welspun Metallics Anjar Steel plant, also known as WSL, is a steel plant in Anjar, Versamedi, Kachchh, Gujarat, India that operates blast furnace (BF), ironmaking, induction furnace (IF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF), and direct reduced iron (DRI) technology.

Location

The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Anjar, Versamedi, Kachchh, Gujarat, India:

Background

The Welspun Anjar Steel plant began operating in 2004.

In 2016, the Welspun Group received a Rs 50,000 fine after they placed a pipeline discharging waste into a local river, among other environmental violations. The incident was reported by local fishermen who were unable to fish after the pipeline was moved.[1]

In 2017, the Welspun Group received an environmental compliance approval from the local ministry on environment for its first expansion project of 3100 ttpa, which is expected to cost Rs 14,690 crore.[2][3] The project was expected to get completed in 36 to 48 months.[4] In a 2022 Half Yearly Compliance report, one of the basic oxygen furnace units out of the two proposed 165 tonne units was cancelled.[5]

Another expansion project for 3300 mtpa is currently in the pipeline; both expansion projects are expected to be completed in 2030.[6]

In 2021, JSW Steel bought the Welspun Group's steel plates and coil mills business for Rs 848 crore.[7][8]

On 27 July, 2022, Welspun announced the commissioning of a blast furnace of capacity 500 ttpa at the Anjar plant.[9]

According to the half yearly compliance to environmental clearance of the plant, published in April 2025, the capacity expansion to add a 4300 m3 blast furnace and one of the two 165 ton BOF units originally proposed are still in pipeline.[10]

There has been no update on the second expansion of 3300 mtpa.
