Background

Yuzhnaya Coal Mine (шахта Южная) is a underground mine near Beryozovsky, in Kemerovsky District, in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.[6]

The Yuzhnaya coal mine is owned and operated by a branch of Chernigovets JSC, owned by SDS UGOL, which in turn is owned by Siberian Business Union (SDS).[7][8]

The mine originally opened in 1941, but mining ceased in 1996, and the mine was liquidated in 2003 by full flooding. The construction of the new modern underground mine Yuzhnaya commenced in 2005 and was completed in 2009.[9] The mine uses longwall underground techniques.[6][7] It has a capacity of 3 million tonnes per annum.[7]

The mine is part of Chernigovets complex, which also includes the Chernigovets coal mine and two processing facilities. More than 90% of produced coal had historically been exported to European countries, as well as to Brazil, China and Egypt.

The mine's operations were suspended in early 2022 by the Federal Service for Technical Supervision due to irregular ventilation and the absence of the technical review of the control systems.[10] Operations were resumed in February 2022. Later in 2022, another suspension of operations for 90 days was put in place.[11] The increased checks appeared to be a result of the tragedy at Listvyazhnaya coal mine in 2021 (also owned by SDS Ugol).
