Background

Denisovskaya Central Coal Mine (Шахта Денисовская Центральная) is an underground coal mine in Sakha Republic, Russia. The Denisovskaya Central coal mine is owned and operated by GOK Denisovsky JSC, which is owned by Kolmar LLC.

It is part of the Denisovsky Mining Complex (Денисовский ГОК) which also includes the Denisovsky Vostochny Coal Mine and Denisovsky Surface Coal Mine. Production data for these mines was typically reported on a consolidated basis rather than separately for each unit.

The Denisovskaya Central mine is the only mine in Russia that mines coal using the room-and-pillar method. Kolmar was the first in Russia to receive a permit to work in this way at a depth below 200 meters. The mine's capacity is 3 million tonnes per annum.

Most of the coal is exported, but it is also supplied to Neryungrinskaya power station. The VaninoTransUgol coal terminal, owned by Kolmar, began exporting coal from the Denisovskaya mining complex in 2020.

By the end of October 2021 the mine produced 1.6 million tonnes of coal. Overall GOK Denisovsky produced 5.8 million tonnes of coal in 2021, 5.1 million tonnes in 2022 and 4.3 million tonnes in 2023.

A government report dated 2022 stated that GOK Denisovsky will reduce production from 2031 due to the end of mining at Denisovskaya (Central) coal mine.

It was estimated that the Denisovsky coal mining complex produced approximately 5.4 million tonnes of coal in 2024.

In 2025, Kolmar’s total coal production amounted to 10.4 million tonnes across its two mining complexes — Denisovsky and Inaglinsky (comprises Inaglinsky Coal Mine 1, Inaglinsky Coal Mine 2 and Inaglinsky Surface Coal Mine).

Incidents and Regulatory Measures

In 2018, a worker died at Denisovsky mine following a rock collapse.

In March 2022 an earthquake of 4.5 magnitude resulted in a collapse in the mine, all miners were evacuated. Repair works were supposed to be completed in just a few days.

In June 2022, miners were evacuated due to heavy smoke, this was followed by the suspension of the mine's activity for 90 days ordered by the Neryuingri court due to non-compliance with the safety standards. Another suspension of activities was ordered in November 2022.

In July 2025, a shift bus carrying 33 employees of AO GOK Denisovsky (Kolmar Group) fell from a 30-metre embankment on a technological road in Yakutia. According to official reports, 13–14 workers were killed and several others injured. A criminal case was opened for provision of unsafe services resulting in multiple deaths.

In July 2025, underground mining operations at the Denisovskaya coal mine were temporarily suspended for 30 days following an inspection due to violations of industrial safety requirements, including breaches of ground support standards and explosion safety requirements.
