Background
The Garjanbahal coal mine is a 2.81 million ton-per-annum (MTPA) opencast mine, operated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, part of the Ib Valley coal mines in Sundergarh, Odisha, India.[5]
The company had an ongoing expansion plan to reach 10 MTPA in 2030.[6] The mine would provide power to the proposed Basundhara power station. But in response to a right of information request in 2021, the mine is not listed by the Government of India as an active new mine project. It is presumed shelved.[7] The mine opened in 2018-2019, operated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India. During its first year, it produced 2.81 million tonnes-per-annum.[5]
