Kamarajar Port Coal Berth 3 is a captive thermal-coal import terminal at Kamarajar Port in Tamil Nadu, India. The terminal is operated by Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL), formerly part of TANGEDCO, and has an annual coal-handling capacity of 9 million tonnes.
Location
The terminal is located approximately 20km north of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India.
Background
Construction of the marine berth began on June 2, 2015 and was completed on December 13, 2017. Kamarajar Port handed the completed berth to TANGEDCO in June 2019 for installation of the shore unloaders, conveyor system and other coal-handling equipment.[1]
Although the marine structure had been completed, Coal Berth 3 did not begin operating at that time because installation of the topside coal-handling facilities remained unfinished. The commissioning date was subsequently postponed several times.
Two shore unloaders installed at Coal Berth 3 were inaugurated in April 2025. Each unloader was reported to have a discharge capacity of 2,600 tonnes per hour and to be capable of unloading vessels of up to 120,000 deadweight tonnes. The equipment was installed primarily to supply the 1,320 MW Ennore SEZ Super Critical Thermal Power Project (Vayalur), with connections also provided to the North Chennai Thermal Power Station.[2]
Coal Berth 3 was subsequently commissioned and operationalized in 2025. Its commissioning added 9 million tonnes per year to Kamarajar Port's installed cargo-handling capacity.[3]
The berth is approximately 340 metres long and has a declared alongside depth of 16 metres.[4]
