Krishnapatnam Port Coal Terminal is an integrated common-user coal-handling facility at Krishnapatnam Port in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh, India. The facility is owned and operated by Adani Krishnapatnam Port Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ).
Coal is handled at several mechanized and multipurpose berths rather than through a single dedicated berth. The principal mechanized coal berths are N6, N7 and N8, while coal may also be handled at N1, N3, N5 and S4 according to cargo requirements and berth availability.[1]
Location
Krishnapatnam Port Coal terminal is located on the east coast of India in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
Background
The terminal's Phase I and Phase II environmental approvals provide for annual coal handling of up to 51 million tonnes. This figure is distinct from the port's total installed capacity of 75 million tonnes per year for all cargoes.[2]
The coal-handling system includes high-capacity ship unloaders, mechanized stockyards, wagon-loading facilities and approximately 12.5 kilometres of conveyors connecting the port with nearby thermal power stations.[3]
Phase III expansion
Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited proposed a Phase III expansion comprising additional coal, general-cargo, container and liquid-cargo facilities. The original proposal included seven additional coal berths with a combined proposed coal-handling capacity of 88 million tonnes per year.[4]
The proposal was subsequently revised during the environmental review process. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change granted environmental and coastal-regulation-zone clearance on January 11, 2021 for a revised Phase III scheme comprising 16 berths, including three liquid-cargo jetties, and three offshore single-buoy moorings. The revised expansion was designed to handle approximately 150.2 million tonnes per year of non-container cargo and 1.1 million TEU of container cargo.[5]
Following APSEZ's acquisition of the port, the Phase III environmental clearance was transferred to Adani Krishnapatnam Port Limited in March 2021.[6]
As of 2026, construction of the complete Phase III expansion had not been reported. APSEZ continued to describe Phase III as a potential long-term capacity addition to be undertaken in line with traffic growth.[7]
Ownership
Krishnapatnam Port was originally developed and operated by Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited, controlled by the CVR Group. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited acquired a 75% interest in the port on October 1, 2020. APSEZ acquired the remaining 25% interest in April 2021, giving it full ownership of the port.[8]
