Kushiro Coal Terminal is a coal port in Japan.
Location
Kushiro Coal Terminal is situated in the center of the eastern coast of Hokkaido island.
Background
The Port of Kushiro, in eastern Hokkaido, is managed by Kushiro City and handles coal at two separate facilities. Imported coal is discharged in the West Port district, where unloaders have operated since 1986 at Wharf 2, with a further unit installed at Wharf 4 in 2004 and brought into service on 1 January 2005; a separate coal loader quay (berth ES01C, 217 m × 7.5 m) serves outbound coal in the East Port district.[1]
Kushiro is also the last Japanese port connected to a domestic coal mine. Kushiro Coal Mine Co. (釧路コールマイン), which took over the former Taiheiyō Coal Mine in April 2002, is Japan's only remaining underground coal producer, extracting from beneath the seabed. Its output has fallen from 257,100 tonnes in 2023 to 185,200 tonnes in 2025 and supplies the 112 MW Kushiro Power Plant, operating since December 2020.[2]
