Background
The Lati coal mine is an opencast mine, operated by Berau Coal Energy, with a capacity of 10 million tonnes-per-annum (MTPA) in Sambakungan, Gunung Tabur, Berau, East Kalimantan, Indonesia.[4] Along with the Binungan coal mine and Sambarata coal mine, it produces a combined 32 million tonnes per annum.[5]
Production at Lati began in 1995. In 2024, the site produced 11.5 million tonnes of coal, up from 7.9 million tonnes in 2023 and 7.7 million tonnes in 2022.[6]
Coal from Lati is blended to produce two of PT Berau Coal's branded products, Agathis and Sungkai.[7][8] Mining is carried out using hydraulic excavators loading dump trucks, with coal transported over an all-weather haul road approximately 11 kilometers to a coal processing plant, where it is crushed, blended, and stockpiled before being loaded onto barges for shipment.[7]
As of December 31, 2023, per the company's most recent estimation report (published March 2024), Lati held estimated coal resources of 258 million tonnes — comprising 118 million tonnes measured, 68 million tonnes indicated, and 72 million tonnes inferred.[6] Coal reserves at Lati were estimated at 34.4 million tonnes (30.1 million tonnes proved and 4.4 million tonnes probable).[6] The site received a national "Gold" PROPER environmental performance rating in 2024, the highest tier among PT Berau Coal's four sites that year, with Binungan and Sambarata receiving "Green" ratings.[6]
