Background

Coal handling operations at the Port of Barranquilla date back to at least December 1990, when the Atlantic Coal Company won a concession to export coal from the port.[2] In 1993, Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Barranquilla S.A. was designated as the port's administrator[3], and by the mid-1990s, multiple companies — including Atlantic Coal and Cementos del Caribe — were officially recording coal exports at the port.[4]

As of 2026, several coal terminals continued to operate in Barranquilla, including the SPR Barranquilla, Compas Barranquilla and Riverport Barranquilla terminals, along with smaller terminals operated by companies such as BITCO SA, Sociedad Portuaria Río Grande SA and Sociedad Portuaria Michellmar SA.

The Port of Barranquilla is also well known for its coke exports, with a 120,000-tonne storage yard and a loading capacity of 7,000 tons per day.[1]
