The Compas Barranquilla Coal Terminal is an operating coal export terminal in the Port of Barranquilla, Atlántico department, Colombia.
Location
Background
The Compas Barranquilla terminal is one of the three largest coal export terminals in the Port of Barranquilla (the other two are the SPR Barranquilla and Riverport Barranquilla terminals).[1] Operated by Compas SA (an acronym for Compañía de Puertos Asociados)[2], the terminal began shipping coal in 2013, registering an annual throughput of 436,568 tonnes in its first year.[3] The terminal features a direct coal/coke loading system using an enclosed conveyor belt to ensure environmental safety during operations, in accordance with Colombia's national regulatory standards.[4]
Coal handling capacity
According to Compas SA's website, the Compas Barranquilla terminal has an annual cargo handling capacity of 3 Mtpa.[4] A specific capacity for coal throughput is not identified[4]; however, according to Compas's annual reports[5], coal has regularly accounted for a significant percentage of the terminal's total tonnage over the past decade, from a low of 46% in 2022[6] to a high of 64% in 2020.[7]
