Background

The Raspadskaya coal mine (шахта Распадская) is an underground mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.[15]

It is part of the Raspadskaya coal mining complex.[16] Raspadskaya Coal Company, a subsidiary of Evraz, operates the entire Raspadskaya coal mining complex.[15]

Evraz announced in December 2021 that it is planning to spin off Raspadskaya Coal Company, but these plans were cancelled in March 2022 due to the sanctions against Russia.[17]

The Raspadskaya coal mine is located in the the southwest of the Tom-Usinsk area of the Kuznetsk (Kuzbass) coal basin.

The Raspadskaya underground mine is the biggest among the five operating mines in the Raspadskaya complex, by recoverable reserves as well as production capacity. The coal produced from the Raspadskaya coal mines is processed at the Raspadskaya coal washing plant at Mezhdurechensk.[16] The mine is one of the largest suppliers of coking coal to Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works, Novolipetsk Steel and to steel companies of the Evraz Group.[18]

The mine's capacity is stated at 7.5 million tonnes per annum[19], however in the last two years 2022 and 2023 production was at 4.6 million tonnes.[20]

In November 2025, it was reported that the mine completed its annual production plan ahead of schedule, having extracted more than 4.7 million tonnes of coal for the year.[21]

In its 2021 annual report, Raspadskaya Coal Company stated that an investment project will continue at the mine, aiming to transition to new reservoirs, maintain the current level of production and purchase equipment.[22] The same was repeated in the 2022 annual report.[23]

Expansion

In August 2023 an investment project at Raspadskaya coal mine was disclosed in the media, involving the construction of a new coal block “Raspadsky-4”. According to the Raspadsky-4 project, by 2027 it is planned to build a complex of buildings and structures, as well as more than 20 km of underground mine workings for seams with coal reserves of over 60 million tonnes using unmanned mining technology. The planned period of coal mining in this area was more than 20 years. Its launch was scheduled for mid-2027. The new mining complex for the project will be a separate production site, the launch of the new unit would help maintain the current level of annual coal production at the Raspadskaya mine at the level of 6 million tonnes per annum. The project is implemented jointly with the Chinese company Beijing LongRuan Technologies Inc.[24][25]

Construction of the new section started in May 2024.[26]

As of December 2025, the project's partner was identified as CCTEG (Chinese Coal Technology & Engineering Group), rather than Beijing LongRuan Technologies Inc. as previously reported. The collaboration encompassed degasification technologies, geological exploration methods, automation of development and extraction, dust removal systems, and IT solutions for mine management. The project's recoverable reserves were stated at 35 million tonnes.[27]

Accidents

A methane gas explosion took place at the mine resulting in the death of 91 miners and rescuers in May 2010.[16]

A fire erupted at the mine in April 2023 at the depth of several hundred meters, miners were evacuated and operations were shortly resumed.[28]

Methane Plumes Detected Nearby

Global Energy Monitor researchers analyze satellite-detected methane plumes in order to determine whether they have been observed at or near the site of GEM energy assets. The satellite data provider creates imagery of individual methane plumes and estimates their emission rates at the time of observation. GEM has reviewed many of these plume detections against Google Earth imagery and GEM’s own energy infrastructure tracker data.
