Background

The Surakachhar coal mine is a mine complex, operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, in Korba, Chhattisgarh, India.[3]

The complex include the Surakachhar main coal mine and Surakachhar 3&4 coal mine. The Surakachhar coal mine has a designed capacity of 0.21 million tonnes-per-annum (MTPA) on a mining lease area of 1045.86 ha.[3] The project is an old project operating since 1963-64, prior to natioalisation of mines, on the consent letters under the Water ACt 1974 and Air ACt 1981, which has been further extended till 31 July, 2010. The project is awaiting environment clearance for a proposed expansion in capacity 0.456 MT on the exisiting mining lease.

Main consumers for the Surakachhar UG coal mine project are SAIL Bhilai steel plant, Chandrapur power station, KRPH (Koradih, Khaparkheda) and Birsinghpur Power Plant.[4]
