VOC Port Coal Jetty I is an operating coal-import facility at V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, India. The berth was developed as a captive coal facility for the adjacent Tuticorin Thermal Power Station.

The terminal is located on the northern side of the inner harbour at V.O. Chidambaranar Port.
Background
Coal Jetty I was commissioned on March 1, 1983.[1] The facility was developed for unloading thermal coal used by the first three units of the 1,050 MW Tuticorin Thermal Power Station. Coal is transferred from the berth to the power station by conveyor.[2]
In 2017, V.O. Chidambaranar Port and TANGEDCO agreed to upgrade Coal Jetty 1 and VOC Port Coal Jetty II. The proposed programme was intended to increase their combined capacity from 6.25 mtpa to 24 mtpa.[3]
The civil reconstruction of Coal Jetty I was completed in April 2019. Subsequent mechanization included new shore unloaders and conveyors, and the upgraded facility entered trial operation in December 2022.[4] Coal Jetty I was rebuilt with a reported design capacity of 12 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).[5]
Actual utilization has been lower than the berth's 12 mtpa design capacity. In 2024, the port described Coal Jetty I as having idle capacity and announced a link conveyor allowing coal unloaded at the berth to be transferred to the port's common coal yard.[6]
A link conveyor connecting Coal Jetty I with the port's common coal yard was subsequently developed to use spare berth capacity for coal cargoes not destined for the Tuticorin power station. The project was expected to add approximately 0.72 mtpa of coal-handling capacity,[7] although no updated capacity has been reported.
