VOC Port Coal Jetty II is an operating dry-bulk berth at V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, India. It was developed as a captive coal berth for the Tuticorin Thermal Power Station, in addition to VOC Port Coal Jetty I, but has subsequently been returned to port operation and adapted to handle coal and other dry-bulk cargoes.
Location
The terminal is located on the northern side of the inner harbour at V.O. Chidambaranar Port.
Background
Coal Jetty II was commissioned on February 27, 1995, to meet the additional coal requirements of all five units of the Tuticorin Thermal Power Station.[1]
Coal Jetties I and II originally had a combined reported capacity of 6.25 mtpa. A 2017 agreement proposed upgrading their combined capacity to 24 mtpa.[2] However, while upgrades to VOC Port Coal Jetty I were completed, the port's 2024–25 annual release continued to list the upgrading and retrofitting of Coal Jetty II as a proposed project.[3]
TANGEDCO subsequently handed Coal Jetty II back to the port authority. In 2024, the port removed portions of the existing conveyor system and modified the hoppers so the berth could also handle fertilizer and fertilizer raw materials.[4]
The port continued to advertise concessions for coal handling at Coal Jetty II in 2025, demonstrating that it remains available for coal cargo despite its conversion to broader dry-bulk use.[5]
