Background
The Alardinskaya coal mine (шахта Алардинская) is an underground coal mine in the Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.
The mine is part of the Yuzhkuzbassugol coal mining complex, which was acquired by Raspadskaya coal mining complex in 2020.[11] The mine is owned by Skakhta Alardinskaya LLC (ООО "Шахта Алардинская"), a subsidiary of Raspadskaya Coal Company which in turn is owned by EVRAZ. [11] Evraz announced in December 2021 that was planning to spin off Raspadskaya, but these plans were cancelled in March 2022 due to the sanctions against Russia.[12][13]
60% of coal is supplied to Evraz ZSMK steel plant and 40% to Raspadskaya washing plant. The steel business of EVRAZ, coke-chemical and steel mills are the main customers of the mine.[14]
In 2022, production was 1.7 million tonnes[15], significantly lower than in 2021 when production reached 3.2 million tonnes.[13][15] The company attributed the decrease in production to increased methane content in coal seams as well as difficult geological conditions.[15] 2023 production figure was not available for the mine.
In 7 months of 2024, the mine extracted 1 million tonnes.[16]
Safety and Working Conditions
In February 2003, a methane outbreak killed 2 miners and 11 were hospitalized.[17][18]
In November 2021, miners were evacuated due to smoke. There were no casualties.[19]
An article from August 2022 referred to 8 active underground fires in the mines of Kuzbass, including at Alardinskaya, as detected by the Federal Authority for Technical Supervision 'RostechNadzor'. The fires were being managed, but not fully eliminated.[20]
In January 2023, it was reported that the operations of the mine were temporarily suspended following the inspection by Rostechnadzor as the mine was gassed for more than 30 minutes and was also under a risk of dust explosion.[21] Later in June 2023, operations were suspended again for 30 days due to severe safety violations.[22]
In August 2024, the Alardinskaya coal mine reported cumulative coal production of 1 million tonnes since the beginning of 2024. Following the completion of extraction in the current longwall panel, mining operations were planned to transition to a newly prepared longwall, equipped with a high-capacity shearer exceeding 1,500 kW of total installed power.[23]
In December 2024, a fire broke out in one of the extraction sections after a seismic event, which was subsequently flooded. A court ruling imposed a punishment in the form of an administrative suspension of mining operations in mine workings for 90 days. The mine was reported to have resumed operations in March 2025.[24]
Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources
Global Energy Monitor researchers have identified coal mine boundary/boundaries and potential sources of coal mine methane (CMM) for this mine. These research results can be used to drive CMM attribution and mitigation efforts, particularly when combined with remotely sensed methane plume locations and mine ownership data. Explore the results with the embedded map at the top of this page by clicking on the mine boundary polygon or the CMM placemarkers to reveal more details. A detailed description of this research can be found in Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources. This data is also available as a downloadable companion dataset to the Global Coal Mine Tracker and the Global Methane Emitters Tracker.
