The Graneles del Norte Coal Terminal is an import terminal located at the Port of Mejillones, Antofagasta, Chile. The terminal supplies thermal coal for electricity generation at the Angamos and Cochrane power stations.

The Graneles del Norte Coal Terminal is one of several commercial cargo terminals located at the Port of Mejillones, Chile.[1][2]
Background
In April 2008, Terminal Graneles del Norte won a concession to build and operate a new coal terminal in Mejillones.[3] Construction was completed in 2010, and the terminal received its first coal shipment in November of that year.[4][5]
The TGN terminal has an annual coal handling capacity of 4 million tonnes per annum.[4] Annual coal throughput figures from recent years include the following:
- 2018: 2,821,169 tonnes[5]
- 2019: 2,898,753 tonnes[6]
- 2024: 2,291,000 tonnes[7]
- 2025: 2,304,000 tonnes[8]
Coal received at the Graneles del Norte terminal is used for electricity generation at the nearby Angamos and Cochrane power stations.[9][10] The operating lifespan of the Graneles del Norte coal terminal will ultimately be impacted by Chile's decision to phase out all coal-fired power plants by 2040.[11] As of 2026, neither the Angamos nor the Cochrane power station had announced a clear retirement date. The Chilean government suggested in a 2025 report that Units 1 and 2 of the Angamos power station might continue burning coal through October 2030[12], despite earlier reports that they would be available for decommissioning in January 2025.[13]
Mejillones, where the coal port is located, is one of Chile's notorious "sacrifice zones," where the environmental and health costs of coal are most acutely felt.[14]
