The Puerto Andino Coal Terminal is an import terminal located at the Port of Mejillones, Antofagasta, Chile. It supplies thermal coal for Engie Chile's power plants in the Mejillones area.
Location
The Puerto Andino Coal Terminal is one of several commercial cargo terminals located at the Port of Mejillones, Chile.[1][2]
Background
The Puerto Andino terminal was designed to supply coal for electricity generation at Engie Chile's Andina-Hornitos and Mejillones power stations.[3] The terminal received its first coal shipment in December 2017.[4] Prior to 2017, Engie's power plants in the Mejillones area imported coal via the adjacent Puerto Mejillones dry bulk terminal.[5]
The terminal has the capacity to transfer more than 6 million mtpa of coal and limestone, with coal accounting for the majority of shipments.[6] Engie reported the following coal throughput figures for the Puerto Andino terminal between 2018 and 2023:
- 2018: 1,506,003 tonnes[6]
- 2019: 1,492,363 tonnes[7]
- 2020: 1,281,822 tonnes[8]
- 2021: 2,342,619 tonnes[9]
- 2022: 1,405,601 tonnes[10]
- 2023: 461,264 tonnes[11]
The trend towards decreasing coal imports at Puerto Andino reflects Engie's stated intention to phase out coal-fired power generation[12], and Chile's decision to decommission all coal plants by 2040.[13] As of 2026, Units 1 and 2 of the Mejillones power station had already been disconnected (in December 2025).[14] The Andina and Hornitos units continued to burn coal, with their decommissioning date postponed until at least 2027.[15]
Mejillones, where the coal port is located, is one of Chile's notorious "sacrifice zones," where the environmental and health costs of coal are most acutely felt.[16]
