Laos and fossil gas

Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) has a population of 7.6 million. [1] The country had an average GDP growth rate of 7.12% from 2000 - 2019.[2] GDP growth remained at 2.3% and 2.5% in 2021 and 2022 respectively and is forecasted to rise to 4% in 2023.[3]

Fossil Gas in the Fuel Mix

As of 2023, there is no fossil gas consumption in Laos.[4]

Hydropower dominates the power sector, accounting for 73% of power generation in 2015. Coal remains the second most prominent fuel for power generation, accounting for 26%.[5][6] Installed capacity for domestic electricity supply stood at 2,526 MW while that for export was 4,550 MW, as of 2017. [6]

Electricity generation is forecasted to reach 70 TWh by 2040, from 17 TWh in 2015, at an average annual growth rate of 5.8%.[5] Approximately 53% of the electricity generated is exported to Thailand. [5]

In its most recent NDC submission, the country has committed to an unconditional GHG emission reduction of 60% by 2030, compared to the baseline scenario. [7]

Fossil Gas Production, Imports, and Transportation

As of 2023, there is no indigenous fossil gas production in Laos.[4]

Government Agencies and other Key Players in Gas Sector

The Ministry of Energy and Mines manages the energy resources in the country. Électricité du Laos (EDL) owns and operates the country's electricity system. [6]
