The Puerto Mejillones Coal Terminal is a mothballed coal terminal located at the Port of Mejillones, Antofagasta, Chile. The terminal supplied thermal coal for electricity generation at Engie's Mejillones and Andina-Hornitos power stations until 2017, when it was replaced by the Puerto Andino coal terminal.

The Puerto Mejillones Coal Terminal is one of several commercial cargo terminals located at the Port of Mejillones, Chile.[1]
Background
Puerto Mejillones began operating as a coal terminal in 1995, and supplied coal for electricity generation at Engie Chile's Mejillones and Andina-Hornitos power stations for nearly two decades.[2] Coal volumes received at the Mejillones terminal roughly doubled after the Andina-Hornitos power plant came online in 2011, as evidenced in Engie's annual reports:
- 2008: 931,759 tonnes[2]
- 2009: 930,132 tonnes[2][3]
- 2010: 883,892 tonnes[2][3]
- 2011: 1,499,877 tonnes[2]
- 2012: 1,874,959 tonnes[3]
- 2013: 1,722,749 tonnes[3]
- 2014: 1,908,901 tonnes[3]
- 2015: 1,902,369 tonnes[3]
In December 2017, Engie began importing coal through its new purpose-built Puerto Andino coal terminal[4], and coal imports through the Puerto Mejillones terminal appear to have subsequently ceased. As of September 2026, the Puerto Mejillones website focused exclusively on the company's handling of liquid bulk cargo and mineral concentrates for the mining industry, with all mention of coal relegated to the history section of the webpage.[5]
